On Wednesday, China warned that the “Golden Dome” missile defense system could trigger a dangerous escalation in weapons production and threaten global stability.

“China is deeply concerned and urges the United States to abandon this system and instead take measures to build trust with major countries around the world to ensure stability,” said Mao Ning, spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
At a press conference, Mao said that President Donald Trump’s plan seeks to create an unrestricted missile defense system and calls for increased research & development and deployment of missile interception technologies. All of this, she added, would raise the risk of an arms race.
Mao noted that the Golden Dome project aims to expand combat capabilities in outer space, including the development of orbital interception systems, which violates the principle of the peaceful use of space established under the Outer Space Treaty.
Trump’s anti-missile system has clear offensive implications, and its implementation will increase the risks of space militarization, undermining international arms control and security agreements, Mao said, pointing out that the “America First” policy seeks to ensure absolute security for the United States at the expense of global stability.
“We urge the United States to abandon the development and deployment of a global missile defense system and to take concrete steps to enhance mutual strategic trust among major powers and safeguard global strategic stability,” Mao said.
According to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, the Golden Dome will cost of US$175 billion and is expected to be operational by 2029. The system will include advanced technologies on land, sea and in space — such as sensors and space-based interceptors — designed to protect the U.S. from ballistic missiles, hypersonic weapons, drones and nuclear threats.
